200 Projects to Get You into Fashion Design [Paperback]

Costumer Reviews

Firstly I feel I should point out to any fashion students looking at this book. It is not a book containing 200 separate briefs or projects like you get set in university or college. If that is what you are buying it for you will be disappointed. It is more 200 steps or individual principles of stages you go through as you are working through a project from beginning to completion. It is not a book of past briefs designers or universities have used or done that you can borrow or do your own version of.

That being said the book is still worth it's while. A great book for beginners and students. Especially for young girls or boys for inspiring and guiding them with hobby projects at home. It will break down and give you a step by step walk through. Of all the information you will need to create a solid foundation in the design principles used in fashion projects. What it won't give you is project briefs themselves. It however is then up to you how far you yourself take these principles and what you do with them in relation to your own project ideas. Each of the 200 steps can be used within any project and help as a foundation for you to build on and go off in different directions as your own project might dictate.

In this way it will help build up your portfolio if you are capable and artistic enough to take each step, build on them, combine them and create visually interesting week sheets. Showing how you went from cooncept to completion.

The book is clear and simple to use. Very visual with good pictures, diagrams, examples of work. The one thing I found the most useful is the way it seems to lead you into the details of each step. Which helped remind me of how steeply I could delve into fabric manipulation or focus more on areas I had become rather thin on. There for increasing the richness of my work. However it is up to you how far you take this. Bearing in mind it will create more work for you so if you have a dead line you will have to manage your time.

I use it as an aid to a project a bit like a walk through guide in case I forget a stage of the development. Is is as useful a tool as a pencil or a ruler.

This is an excellent book. The illustrations are clear and inspiring. I would recommend this to any body interested in the nuts and bolts of fashion design, from the student building a portfolio to the person just wanting to flex their creative muscles.
